Not at all "splendid". I believe the 5-star reviews were purchased. Photos are a complete misrepresentation. Instead of getting two rooms with balconies, bed boards, painted walls, and nice furniture (as the photos show), we got something equivalent to what you'd expect from a $10/night Southeast Asia youth hostel - leaking toilet, chipped mirrors, mold growing at baseboards, dusty linoleum tiles, flat single pillow per person, no bathroom amenities, no views (where is the cathedral?), and narrow dimly lit staircase. Plus I didn't feel safe with single key door locks that seem to lock when you turn the key but didn't. (Eventually it did with some cranking.) Our building was super old, and didn't look like what was advertised. I suspect they put us in the old "Splendid" hotel and told us it was the one we booked as another reviewer had experienced.
At check in, I showed the front desk staff the printout of our 2-room reservation but they insisted that we only booked one room. Fortunately my Vietnamese speaking friend helped us get the second room we booked, but little did we know that we'd be given the marginal rooms rather than the ones you see in the photos. Apparently they also were "fully booked" so they could not "upgrade" us to the rooms I thought we booked. We stayed because our reservation was only for one night and we didn't want to deal with trying to get a refund. We enjoyed the neighborhood nonetheless, but we all dreaded going back to this hotel to sleep LOL
