Happisburgh Lighthouse at sunset
Happisburgh Lighthouse in Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast is the only independently operated lighthouse in Great Britain. It is also the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia. The building was constructed in 1790 as one of a pair of candle-powered lights. It was electrified in 1947. The tower is 85 ft tall, putting the lantern at 134 ft above sea level.
Happisburgh battered sea groynes The story of the village is inseparably linked with the sea. For residents of Happisburgh, and for hundreds who visit each year, the sea represents many different things: a source of livelihood; a place of recreation and fun; a sight to gaze at and wonder over; a worrying, unpredictable, dangerous and potentially destructive power. Happisburgh has lost land to the sea throughout the centuries. The rate of erosion has been erratic - at times large areas have disappeared overnight, and at others the cliff has remained virtually the same for some years. You can walk for miles on this beach, as far as Sea Palling if you wanted to. I stayed here some years ago and was very impressed, however it is very tired and dated now, they are doing some renovations in some areas. Definitely not worth the money at the moment.

Terrible check in. I was forced to handover cash in case of any damages I caused. I’m not sure who usually stays there for this to happen but I’ll not be staying again. I was told this in the T & Cs small print. If I didn’t pay i couldn’t check in and I wouldn’t get a refund from the booking.
