"Friendly staff, comfy beds. The shower was a little difficult to control the temperature of, and the room was set to hot. Beside that we had a great stay, really convenient for the town centre and mining museum."

"Very cute half timbered inn with a busy bar/dining room full of locals and visitors. Good food and excellent service. Because this is an authentic property, you hear everything from the creaky floors to the noise from your hotel neighbors and the dining room downstairs. Narrow twisting stairs (no elevator) made luggage a challenge. Bedding was scratchy and unpleasant and they did not provide a blanket for our 3rd person in the room."

"The staff were friendly but I did get told off for using the lower door in order to avoid the steps but I explained that I suffer from knee stiffness. The breakfast was good but the room requires updating, the carpet was quite bad and there were no facilities in the room such as a mini fride"

"Stayed for 1 night Pros: clean, simple, comes with kitchenette Fairly quiet with the windows closed Affordable :) Easy check-in (mobile) Cons: Elevator - the first elevator coming in from the garage didn’t work or was turned off when we arrived late at night, took quite a bit of searching to discover there is another one just down the hall and around the corner. Some signs would been been very helpful! Lint - I love that there’s a laundry room in the hotel, but the dryers were full of lint to the point it’s a serious fire hazard. No signs asking people to remove lint, no bins for the lint. All in all I love the concept of the staffless hotels , but it could use some fine tuning. "

"My wife and I stayed in Haus am Stadttor for two nights in August 2025. We absolutely loved the place. It is perfectly located and very comfortable, with everything you could possibly need for a short or long-term stay. We slept like babies in the comfortable bed and enjoyed the quiet, though the house is located a very short walk to the altstadt. Mathias was also very friendly, welcoming, kind, helpful and flexible. He let us check in early and allowed us a late check-out. All-in-all, a great stay!"

"I was at Haven, formerly Hotel Schmidt-Monique in Bochum for 8-days. I arrived 25-minutes before the “official” check-in time and was told I could check-in early for €20. Needless to say I waited the 25 minutes. The new owners are focussing on the hotel so the restaurant that was originally part of the hotel complex is currently closed. There are very few options for eating in the area of the hotel. There is a great bakery for coffee and something to eat in the morning, but it’s a little trickier if you’re looking for something later on in the day. It’s well situated in terms of catching a bus to get around town or to get to the train stations. That was very convenient. There was one staff member at the front desk that spoke English that was very helpful. The hotel does not have air-conditioning and Yusef found a fan to cool the air in my room. The room is spacious by European standards although the bathroom is very small and the space is very confined. If the hotel wanted to elevate the experience for guests, they could invest in better mattresses as the one I slept on felt like I was lying on the ground. They could also invest in higher quality toiletries in the bathroom. Because the restaurant is closed and access to other restaurants is limited, it would go along way with guest if the hotel had a coffee machine in the lobby for guests to have access to coffee, tea, espresso, etc. in the morning. A machine would not require any manpower(front desk is not staffed til later)"
