This tour takes visitors on a thrilling adventure, right into the heart of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in the Niagara basin.
Few sights are as arresting as the mighty Horseshoe Falls in the Niagara basin. Even from a distance, the awesome power of this natural phenomenon is palpable.
The statistics are mind blowing: 2,800 cubic metres of water crashes over the brink every second, at an astonishing rate of 65 kilometres an hour. Now who wouldn’t want to get a closer look? Happily, Journey Behind the Falls gives visitors the chance to do just that.
Access the adventure from the Table Rock Welcome Centre, which is right on the edge of the falls on the Canadian side. Feel the pulsating energy of the crashing water as you as you make the 46-metre descent into the bedrock. Step out of the elevator and into a series of tunnels that lead to various viewing portals which sit one third of the way behind the crashing curtain of water. The aptly-named Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal allow braver visitors to get even closer to the edge. Hold your breath as you watch the water cascade downward at an incredible rate and be glad of the barricades that ensure your safety.
After this, venture out onto the observation platform on the west side of the falls to avail of a unique photographic vantage point. While here, take a moment to absorb the intensity of this space as one fifth of the world’s fresh water crashes down before you with a thunderous roar.
Although ponchos are provided to protect you from the elements, the reality is that they are powerless in the force of such nature. So expect to get wet and you won’t be disappointed.
For most visitors, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get close to one of nature’s raging beasts but if heights, tight spaces and water make you nervous – best enjoy the falls from one of the other many attractions!
