At the foot of the Alaska Peninsula, this small, pretty town offers the perfect introduction to the outdoor way of life.

Hike beside crystal clear, frigid rivers and enjoy superb fishing at King Salmon. Experience the friendly hospitality of the local residents before you set off for the extreme conditions of Katmai National Park and Preserve.

Built around an old World War II military base, the long airport runway is a testament to a more arduous time. Visit the now peaceful, idyllic town. Just over 400 permanent residents welcome visitors and make them feel part of the community.

Fishing fanatics will enjoy the excellent cold-water fishing in local waterways. Try to catch all five local species of salmon from the banks of the Naknek River while you relax in the tranquil locale, a long way from the bustle of the urban world. For a change of scene, walk east through lush undergrowth to Lake Naknek. Here, you’ll find an abundance of fish of smaller varieties.

Book an extended stay at one of the various lodges along the river to devote serious time to improving your fishing skills. Spend days among this wild landscape with nothing to concern you except catching some tasty dinner.

After a long day casting your line into the river, make your way back into town and check out either of the restaurants. Eat superb fish and meat while you share fishing tales and make plans for new spots to try the next day.

King Salmon is located 284 miles (457 kilometres) southwest of Anchorage. Stay at one of the small lodges around town or the hotel close to the city centre. The visitor centre near the airport will provide information on excursions and trips to Katmai National Park.

Get a taste of traditional Alaska with fantastic fishing in a stunning environment at King Salmon.
