Kyle

The mainland gateway to the island of Skye, this tiny town features pretty white-washed buildings and access to a number of lovely walking areas.

Kyle, also known as Kyle of Lochalsh, is the largest village in Lochalsh. This low-key town is a wonderful base for exploring the Isle of Skye and Scotland’s northwestern coast. Enjoy the views of the iconic Skye Bridge, take a scenic train ride and journey to the famous castle just outside town.

Until 1995, ferries bound for Skye departed from Kyle, making this town an important stopover point for visitors touring the island. The opening of the Skye Bridge eliminated the need for the ferry and significantly changed the town’s role. Kyle remains a charming place to linger, with attractive streets and whitewashed buildings. After walking around town, cross the bridge and continue to the Isle of Skye by car or on foot.

For an excellent view of the bridge, make the 2-mile (3-kilometer) hike to the Plock of Kyle viewpoint. This hilltop offers fantastic views across to the Isle of Skye, with a view indicator available to help you identify the peaks.

The Kyle Line is one of Scotland’s most scenic railway routes, stretching from Inverness to Kyle. The short section of the route between Kyle and Strathcarron is among the most picturesque. Enjoy it on a daytrip. After the ride, see the historic railway memorabilia in the Kyle Line Museum. Located in the Kyle Railway Station, the museum features black-and-white photographs of the region and examines the impact of the railway on Scotland during the early days of train travel.

Journey to famous Eilean Donan CastleOpens in a new window, located a short drive east of Kyle. Dating from the 13th century, this striking castle is one of Scotland’s most recognizable landmarks. Explore restored interior rooms filled with Jacobean artifacts and see beautiful views over three surrounding sea lochs from high on the castle battlements.

Kyle is 78 miles (126 kilometers) from InvernessOpens in a new window. Reach the town by bus or train. Make time for a stop in quaint Kyle en route to the Isle of Skye.
