Like many university towns Linkoping started its days as a religious centre. The Vreta Kloster was the first convent in Sweden and was founded as early as the 12th century. Linkoping is located along Gota Canal and connects to a few major roads. Its location between some of the bigger cities in Sweden make it easily accessible by car and train, and there is a small domestic airport. As a tourist it is easy to get around in the centre by foot or by bike.
