This small archipelago offers year-round warm temperatures, impressive Baroque architecture and stunning water-locked cityscapes to rival the likes of Venice.
Malta’s capital city, Valletta, may be the smallest in Europe, but it still manages to cram in a lot of entertainment! Enjoy museums, lovingly cared for gardens and picture perfect views in the capital before venturing out to uncover the rest of Malta.
Valletta is terrific for exploring by foot. The city is surrounded by water and high walls which were originally intended as a defence against the Ottomans after they attempted to seize control of Malta in 1565. Today, Valletta is the cultural centre of Malta and has some of the most interesting historical attractions, such as the Lascaris War Rooms, the Malta at War Museum and St John’s Co-Cathedral.
Walk along the city walls during sunset for the most striking views of Valletta, the Grand Harbour and the Mediterranean Sea. For a peaceful stroll, visit the Lower Barakka Gardens, where you can make the most of relaxing water features and spots providing shade to shelter from the sun.
Perhaps four wheels are more your thing? Try something a little different with a visit to The Malta Classic Car Collection just 30 minutes outside of Valleta by car and close toSt. Paul's Bay. The museum holds a privately owned collection of 100 classic cars dating back to 1928. You can also immerse yourself in more nostalgia with the attraction's retro memorabilia from the 1940s to the 1960s, including jukeboxes, gramophones and models dressed in retro clothing.
Watching marine life can be fascinating and soothing, so after your nostalgia fix at the classic car museum, you can call in at the Malta National Aquarium, which is just seven minutes away on foot. The aquarium has 41 tanks, arranged to reflect different areas of Malta and periods of time. The Roman section is a particular highlight since it showcases an ancient ghost shipwreck, home to damselfish, clownfish and cleaner shrimp.
The station nearby to the aquarium allows you to complete your day of animal discovery by taking a short 20-minute bus journey to Birdpark Malta. Participate in a daily handling session and get up close with one of the park’s macaws, owls or reptiles for an unforgettable experience!
Malta has a distinct style which will intrigue you from your very first visit. Take time to explore the islands and you’ll surely want to return.
