Thank you for talking with me about your review. We did look at the screen door and we will fix that. With our geography here, the Upper Peninsula has five iron ranges, that is areas where iron ore is found in large formations and is mined and shipped all over the United States to foundries, turned into steel and used for automobiles, buildings, and more. There are several major mines in our area.As we are in the country and do not have city water but have a deep well. All Upper Peninsula residents who do not live in towns have wells. These wells are drilled through the ore rock formations and this makes our water taste different depending on the rock formations they drill through to get water. The well at the Bear Paw- as well as other wells in the area- have an odor from the iron that smells like Sulphur, or egg yolks is the best way I can describe it. This is what you smelled when you showered. Some people like the taste of the water, and others prefer bottled water to drink, which is available in the office. The health department requires water testing for bacteria quarterly, as well as a chemical analysis annually. We have never had a bad report, meaning our water is excellent. As it was so cold the night before, Jeremy did turn your heater up to ensure the room was cozy for you when you arrived, that is why it was so warm when you checked in. I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. Being out in the country, the couple WIFI providers we have access to provide limited service, and if all our guests are using WIFI at the same time on phones and tablets, the amount of signal we have is self-limited. Our credit card machine is also WIFI dependent, but we do have a Plan B in place if we cannot run your card through right away. We do have a very good TV system through Direct TV, and also have several board games and outdoor activities available for guests who have to wait until WIFI is available. We are working on that problem, but again, our country location limited the amount of WIFI signal we are able to offer.I did speak to the in-house manager about making sure he runs his fan in their attached apartment and points it outward through an open window if he has to smoke, and again I told him how much guests (and me) hate smoke. I hope you were able to find satisfactory accommodations at a good price elsewhere, and again I apologize for your inconvenience.

I am sorry we did not meet your expectation. I am trying to figure out what was so odd about our property, as it is no different than any other older mom and pop motel. One great asset we do have is we are pet friendly, which most new big box motels are not. Being out of town and in a country setting, our communication services like WIFI and satellite TV are limited as to what a service provider can offer us, and we are grateful to have WIFI and Satellite TV, even if they are not perfect like in-town services are. I have spoken to our housekeeper about the coffee pot in your room as that is not acceptable. I look forward to my morning coffee and know you were disappointed to not have that amenity perfect. She apologized and said she will be more attentive. We do have a hair dryer available in the office for guests who request one.

The managers live at the office, and I am wondering if you rang the bell to summon them. They keep the office door locked, but should be available when you ring for them. I apologize if your room smelled like smoke, if your windows were open to let fresh lake breeze in but someone downstairs was smoking, I am wondering if smoke just wafted in through the window? Being in the hospitality business for 45 years, we know how important it is to ensure all the cracks and crevices are caulked and sealed to prevent those pesky little bugs from entering our rooms, But they are attracted to heat and light, so when guests open their doors and sometimes hold them open for a little bit, the mosquitos will enter. Being in the country surrounded by lakes and wetlands, mosquitos live there and there is not too much we can do to kill the zillions of them that live in the entire Upper Michigan peninsula. Lodging in the cities if there is concrete and no mosquito habitat, one will not find the mosquito population we have here. In our office, we do have free bug spray for our guests. I will remind our desk persons to remind guests to keep their doors closed, and enter and exit rooms quickly during dusk when mosquitos are most prevalent. I am sorry for your inconvenience, and hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay..

Although we are an older mom and pop motel, our rooms are clean and cozy and we offer amenities like frig, microwaves, air conditioners, in room coffee, the campfire pit, cable TV, free WIFI, free canoes and kayaks, and outdoor games. Why would she fall through the floor in the office? She barely weighs a hundred pounds, and it is a solid wood floor that we just recarpeted at the beginning of the season. I better worry about myself as I weigh twice as much as her and have a bad hip-! Each room has heat that is controlled by a thermostat on the wall, so guests can choose a warmer room or a cooler one. As we are on older mom-and-pop motel and not one of the new big box places, we will have a different odor than the chemical smells that high-rises sometimes have from new carpet and paint. We do have beautiful wood pine paneling in all the rooms and hallways and are fire sensitive, and do not allow cooking in our rooms other than the microwaves (other than our housekeeping cabins that have full kitchens and fire extinguishers) , and of course smoking is prohibited under state law. My phone number is available and rings into my cell phone so I am available 24 hours a day if guests want to contact me.

I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. If that young girl, who also cleans rooms at the motel and manages it with her husband, had made us aware that the toilet seat was cracked we would have fixed it immediately. That must have been a pretty large guest who sat on that seat and broke it, and we cannot tell the size of our guests when they reserve. I spoke to her and the other housekeeper about the dirty windows and they were all washed.

If there are complaints of cleanliness I like to see for myself so I can work with the housekeepers myself and demonstrate to them what I expect them to do, but if I do not hear about problems until after the fact is more difficult to educate them. We locals take for granted how awesome it is to live, work and play here as it is quite different than city living. There is nothing better than watching the fish jump while you are toasting a big gooey marshmallow over the campfire to make a s'more and roasted hot dogs or brats taste a lot better than the microwaved ones we make at home. We do have extended stay rooms too if you are going to be here a few days and want a full kitchen, too.

I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. I reply to reviews, both positive and negative promptly but this review did not show up in my inbox until this morning, October 15. We are remodeling and updating our rooms this winter when we close for the season, but we are an older mom and pop motel and almost all our guests love our place as we have character and are not the new sterile big box hotels.

It is heartwarming for us to find a true appreciator (Not sure if that is a real word or not) of the Bear Paw! We all work hard to make our guest's stays memorable. We know we are not the big box hotels that have taken over the lodging industry, but think we are quaint and offer a great experience for guests like yourself who appreciate what we have to offer. Thank you for your less than positive review. We all work hard to make your stay enjoyable, and we all do make an effort to make our property a nice place to stay. I did speak with Jeremy our manager- who by the way got a great inhouse review last night from another guest "Paul"-about not riding his buggy around in the parking lot. As our grounds are big and it is a long walk when you have to do it many times a day, he uses it when he goes down to the docks to rent kayaks and canoes or check on the people fishing off the docks, or stock up the campfire wood, or wood check the beavers swimming in the channel. He would never intentionally spray loads of dirt and dust on your vehicle, and found an alternative route to get the docks when there are cars in the parking lot. He did say you asked him to stop riding in the parking lot by your car, and he did stop right away. He spent last evening sweeping down cobwebs. We are aware of the soft floor by the shower. The whole bathroom floor will need to be replaced when we close this winter, and that repair is on the maintenance books.

Watching those beaver swimming so close to us is pretty fun to watch, especially if you take out a kayak you can get really close to them. An eagle flying overhead is a symbol of good luck! Thanks for staying with us, hope you will book with us again!

With our busy motel, if multiple rooms and multiple guests decide to shower at the same time, we have two extra-large gallon hot water tanks, and they will empty and do not have instant recovery. If we had another tank that would not make a difference with so many guests showering at the same time. We do not use our laundry room until noon when guests have checked out to avoid us draining the tank. Our rates are competitive if not even lower than our neighbor's rates, and we offer all the free firewood you want to burn in a campfire, a gas BBQ grill we do not charge for, yard games, and free use of our kayaks and canoes, as well as daily housekeeping service.

I will check out your comments and as it looks like the air conditioners are sealed properly both inside and outside, I will tell the desk man to advise guests not to prop their doors open with they take luggage in. I am not sure why the mosquitos bother some guests more than others, as most guests do not even comment or have issues with them.

The young man who helped you get checked in and settled is from the big city and is not used to dealing with all our seasonal bugs like mosquitos, flies, black flies and ladybugs, so we talked about mother nature. All our doors open to the outdoors and he is going to advise guests not to prop their doors wide open while they bring luggage, coolers, and other kid things in. We searched the room all over for small open areas where mosquitos could have come in, and could not find anywhere they would come in, so they must have hopped on your luggage when your door was propped wide open. We do have free mosquito spray in the office available for guests who want to enjoy the lake or the campfire.

Thank you for staying with us and bringing this to my attention. In the State of Michigan, marijuana is legal to smoke or use if you are over 21 years of age, just as alcohol is. The manager's apartment is adjacent to the office, separated by a door that is kept closed. Although our new manager is over 21 years old, I did speak with him about how people feel about smelling smoke, whether it be marijuana or cigarettes or cigars. I myself find it very offensive also. He was unaware that when he smokes in his apartment, the smells waft into the office and others can smell it and might find it offensive. We will set up a screened in tent away from the office and front of the motel for a smoking area for him and also for other guests who may want to use it. I also want to apologize to you for him phoning you and telling you that there would be a cleaning fee for the big mess you left in your room, of course that is part of your room rate unless otherwise specified upon check in.

We try not to use chemicals to knock back the insects but do have bug spray in the office for our guest's convenience.

I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. We are working on the fly issues and have plugged holes, mended screens, hung fly paper and have swatters in the rooms. Being right on the water like we are, and up north in the woods, we will and do have all kinds of insects and try to control them the best we can. I do not like loud vehicles either, seems like more people are driving noisy diesel engines. As there is no place near us open at 12:30, they must have been visiting family.

The same random dude you refer to is the same one who will change your flat tire and not charge you, get up in the middle of the night when you lock yourself out of the room, unplug your toilet when you overstuff it with toilet paper, get you a pop when you say you did not get it from the machine, and rent you kayaks and loan you a fishing pole, and haul your free wood and start your campfire for you. I resent your comment that we don't care to do work and we think we have a pretty nice place!

I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. I do not like it either when smokers just flick their butts wherever they want to and let trash fall out of their card when they get in and out. We have trash cans and butt cans located in public areas and people should be considerate enough to use them. We do clean up the parking lot daily, but first priority is getting accommodations ready to go for incoming guests. I checked the windows in your room, and they all closed and securely locked. If you can be more specific I can investigate further. The manager lives in the apartment behind the office, and they do not blast their music. So, it is not fair for you to say the staff of the hotel blasted music and sang loudly. Was someone out by the campfire maybe? If you would have called us and informed us, I could have taken care of the problem immediately.

I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. I did speak with the manager about the credit card info and we implemented a different process for them to use. It was so cold and windy here last week we did take window air conditioners out, but the bathroom windows have screens and open fully, as do the big windows by the beds and the screen doors. We are located on one of the iron ore ranges in the Upper Peninsula, and with the geology sometimes the water does have a sulphur smell, but we provide all the individual bottled water guests ask for to drink. We also have a water softener for both hot and cold water. if you would have told me, I could have spoken to noisy guests to minimize disruptions.

Kids seem to like to go up and down the stairs, and if you would have let me know I could have asked them to quiet down, We do not have steam heat, each room has an individual electric heater in them. Many years ago before we bought the Bear Paw, they had hot water heat but their wood boiler plugged up and they took it out and put the individual electric heat in, and there are individual thermostats in every room.
