A seaside village and a popular spot for holiday-makers for over a century, which today still retains its antique charm.

The first holiday homes were built along the shore at Mission Beach all the way back in the 1920s. The resort boomed in the 1960s with new developments re-invigorating the place. And ever since then the visitors have not stopped returning to lounge beneath the West Coast sun and wander along the boardwalk by the beach where street performers and artists, rollerbladers and skateboarders keep the atmosphere lively.

On the beach itself you can join the crowds by renting a bike or some blades, playing volleyball, or hopping on a boogie board and making the most of the spot.

There is plenty of fun to be had out on the water too. The remains of shipwrecks lie just over 800 metres offshore —local dive companies organise trips out to explore the spot. Alternatively you can go for a spot of fishing on the jetty at the south of the beach.

At the heart of Mission Beach is Belmont Park, a great old-fashioned locale where you can go for a ride on the Giant Dipper wooden rollercoaster, the Octotron or the three-storey Vertical Plunge. If you’re visiting with children, take them on the gentler Tilt-A-Whirl or try out the bumper cars and the Liberty Carousel. The park itself is free to enter, and you can buy wristbands from the ticket desk to give you unlimited access to all the rides.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants around Mission Beach, and at every one you’ll find a relaxed and welcoming vibe. On the beach you’ll find all the amenities you’ll need, including toilets and showers. If you’re driving here, bear in mind that parking spots fill up early in the day, so coming by bike or on public transport will ensure you can come and truly unwind.
