Monastery of the Holy Eucharist

Simala Shrine showing forests and a cascade
Light candles in this sea of color and exultations and capture photos of the mesmerizing façade of this monastery where pilgrims gather to pay homage to a miraculous Virgin Mary.

The Simala Shrine is a majestic castle and religious institution that is among the most iconic sights in the Philippines. Winding staircases, jagged terraces and arched balconies make up the stunning frontage of this enormous structure. Attend the acclaimed daily Mass for a glimpse into the passion of the monastery’s devotees.

Appreciate the multifaceted layout of the castle’s façade and the sheer enormity of the structure. Its long entrance staircases rise from the floor of a tropical forest that seems to be reclaiming the vast building. Try to understand the jumbled architectural styles, such as the turquoise-and-gold colonial roof and the concrete base.

The congregation of Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration constructed the building in 1998. Hear tales about the Virgin Mary miraculously curing epidemics and endearing the monks to the local people. It is said that her statue shed oily tears several times in the late 1990s.

Enter the church and gaze at the gold colors of the impressive altar. Admire the intricate décor lining the white interior walls and arches in the ceiling. Countless letters from devotees expressing their gratitude for miracles are pinned along the walls.

Purchase colorful candles to accompany your prayer or wish. The color of the candle relates to the type of prayer. Select gold for healing, red for love, green for prosperity, white for purity and others for additional sentiments.

Expect the church to be particularly busy from Friday through Sunday. Eating in the shrine is not permitted, although you may bring picnics to enjoy outside. Make sure to wear appropriate formal dress, as skirts, shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed.

The Simala Shrine is in the Upper Lindogon area, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) southwest along the coast from Cebu. The journey should take about 90 minutes by car. Enjoy coastal views on the way as you pass the communes of Naga and Carcar along the Cebu Strait. Many vacationers choose to take a taxi for the round-trip.
