In Mosjøen, you will find outdoor activities in gorgeous natural surroundings, in addition to art and music among listed buildings along the Vefsnfjord.
Mosjøen is located on the beautiful Helgeland coastline, a pleasant small village that calls itself the centre point of Norway. A relaxing train ride through the gorgeous natural surroundings on the Nordland Line takes you to the railway station just across from the Dolstad Church (Dolstad kirke), which dates back to 1734, and which also lights up the area with its bright red colour, giving a great first impression. Take a short walk from the church down to the Town Park (Byparken), which is a living demonstration of all the changes Mosjøen has gone through since it was awarded town status in 1875, and which is partly listed by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Here you can enjoy a picnic while you listen to a concert in the pavilion, or alternatively take a leisurely stroll among the beautiful flowers and ponds.
Take a leisurely stroll through cosy Sjøgata, which comprises a number of listed wooden houses and quays dating back to the 1800s, and which is Mosjøen’s biggest tourist attraction. Sit down on the quay with an ice cream and look out over the Vefsnfjord or up towards the colourful buildings. The Quarter is a well-known area for artists, and you can find exciting handicrafts here, such as the southern Sami duodji. Also located here is the Vefsn Museum, which has a wide variety of exhibitions about Mosjøen and the surrounding area. Attached to the museum is a folk museum about Dolstad with buildings that show the development in the area over the last 300 years.
For concerts and other cultural events, the Kulturverkstedet is in the middle of it all. Helgeland Sinfonietta also holds classical music concerts in the town from time to time. Galleria Art Festival is arranged annually and lasts a week, so it is the ideal time for a trip to Mosjøen. The main focus is on visual art, and the town hosts the Filmeria film festival. In September, Tiendebytte is held. This market has a long tradition in Mosjøen and the surrounding area.
Helgeland can offer fantastic outdoor activities, and with Mosjøen as a starting point, you have access to several marked ski trails, many hiking trails, fishing options in the beautiful natural surroundings and even the Øyfjellgrotta to climb in. This limestone grotto features an underground river, a lake and a waterfall. Although it is narrow in places and a bit dark, it is suitable for families with slightly older children, and is almost certainly an experience you will never forget! A weekend trip to Mosjøen can be both active and relaxing.
