Quality Inn & Suites Vandalia near I-70 and Hwy 51
8/10 Good
"Although upon arrival, we were quite put off by the exterior condition and appearance of this old Quality Inn, once in our room, most everything seemed updated and clean. The beds and bedding were comfortable. There was plenty of hot water and the shower worked well. The heater was suitably quiet too. The TV was like any other motel TV's. Like the "by Wyndham" franchises, in this case..a "Choice Hotels" franchise buys up old hotel chains and specializes in giving renovation advantages to franchisees who pass on lower pricing to customers. Of course they are not gleaming new hotels. I would say on average the "free" breakfast was just as good as that at any other full priced hotel with eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy and all the rest. One glaring unrenovated issue in our room was a delaminating hollow core door between the sink vanity and the shower/toilet room and a rusting steel door frame at floor level...undoubtedly caused by years of mopping the floor. "
"We had a really disappointing experience with Powhatan Motel. After driving 16 hours on a long road trip, we arrived around 3am expecting to check in, since the motel clearly advertises a 24-hour front desk and check-in availability after 4pm.
Unfortunately, that was not the case. There was no one available at the front desk, no way to check in, and no communication whatsoever from the property. We were completely exhausted and left stranded in the middle of the night with a valid reservation.
Because of this, we had no choice but to get back on the road and continue driving through the night, turning what should have been a 16-hour trip into nearly 24 hours. It was unsafe, stressful, and entirely avoidable.
If a property is going to advertise a 24-hour front desk, they need to honor that commitment. At the very least, they should clearly communicate any restrictions on late-night arrivals, as many other hotels do. This level of unreliability is unacceptable, especially for travelers depending on a place to rest.
Also, Expedia did not give us a refund saying that we were the ones who cancelled. Cherry on top!"
