Mullet Beach has everything you’d expect from an island paradise. This quiet hamlet has palm trees, long stretches of white sand and idyllic crystal-clear water with few rocks. Swim out to waves within paddling distance of the shore or make the most of watersports such as parasailing and windsurfing. Enjoy a lazy afternoon in one of the beach bars with a cocktail in hand.
A luxury resort once overlooked Mullet Bay and crowds of tourists swarmed the beach every day of the week. When the resort was destroyed by hurricane Luis in 1995 it was never rebuilt and Mullet Bay has become one of the quietest beaches on the island. The peace and quiet is now part of its charm and Mullet Bay is a favourite with locals.
Arrive early to find a spot of shade beneath a palm tree and throw down a towel on your own stretch of white sand. A kiosk on the beach rents out umbrellas and deck chairs for the day. Hire equipment for water sports from vendors along the sand.
Go paddleboarding and surfing. Northerly winds bring a good swell offshore that’s ripe for surfing and the bay isn’t crowded with swimmers. Mullet Bay is one of the most popular surf spots on the island.
Hire a snorkel and swim off the rocks at either end of the beach. You’ll see a range of colourful fish swimming against the rock walls and sea sponges on the ground but there’s not much coral around Mullet Bay. When it’s time for a break, eat seafood and drink cocktails from beach bars that look out over the bay.
Mullet Bay is on the west coast of St. Maarten, an easy 20-minute drive from the international airport. Park for free but take your belongings with you or leave them in your hotel because the car park isn’t monitored by security.
