Munds Wagon Trail

Travel Guide

The broad expanse of Damfino Canyon stretches out before you as you begin your trek down the Munds Wagon Trail. This is about a mile into the journey (and, truth be told, was taken on the return trip).

You can see the trail heading off into the shadows to the lower right of the photo.

A full shot of the large stand of rocks near the end of Munds Wagon Trail. That's Merry-go-Round Rock to the right, The Cocktail Party in the middle, and the end of the Cow Pie Trail on the far left.

From this view, it's fairly obviously how that trail got its name.
The Munds Wagon Trail zig-zags across the wide, dirt road that ferries jeeps and off-road vehicles and their passengers comfortably to the top of the canyon.

Truth be told, there are only about three places where you need to cross, but the trail itself follows the road rather closely for long stretches. At those points, you're never more than fifty feet from the road itself -- which can be a bit of an encumbrance when the dust is rolling high.

For the most part, though, you'll be left alone to enjoy the vistas all by yourself. And, believe it or not, the road is often the best place to see them.
The end of the Cow Pie Trail. That's right, the Cow Pie Trail. A .6-mile spur off the Munds Wagon Trail is called the Cow Pie Trail, primarily for the...er...mounds of rock that form at the base of this mesa.

The site served as the location for many an early western -- and I do mean many -- but it is now more or less just a odd little jog off a very long trail heading up into the hills. Very beautiful, though. I think the word "beautiful" and all its variations should be banned from the area, since it pretty much re-defines the idea of natural beauty in almost any form.

Still, there it is -- gorgeundrous, or whatever you want to call it. Hike it yourself and get a good look.

The room was very nice and spacious. We loved having a fireplace in the room. The only issue we had was the general cleanliness.
