The host is 10th generation of the Roys (Rajbari) and gave us a fascinating tour while explaining the history of the palace and the family’s efforts to restore it. The palace continues to play a significant role in the educational and cultural life of the local community to this day.
While visiting the Victoria Memorial building in Kolkata we noticed that honourable mention is made of the Roys family for their work in advocating for educational advancement. The family and the palace have faced a series of challenges and upheavals over the years, not least being initially placed in East Pakistan during partition before being reclaimed as part of Indian West Bengal. It is a rare gift to be able to learn about this a family who were so personally impacted by historical events.
