Helpful staff, conveniently located hotel
We drove from Tokyo. We called the hotel early in the morning to ask about the road conditions in the mountains. Zen (mentioned a lot in other reviews) was wonderful. We got route recommendations, tips on when and where to get tire chains, and an open line (which we used) in case we needed further help. The hotel is comfortable. We got the half board option. Both buffets had plenty of choices and the staff was very warm and friendly. The hotel can arrange pretty much anything (Zen knows it all). Ski equipment rental (in the basement), ski instructors, ski lift tickets, and complimentary van to the slopes. The town (a group of small hotels) is quite small and seems to die out when the sun goes down. Half board worked well for us. There's a couple of restaurants up in the slopes (some include lunch with your day ticket if you purchase it from the hotel), but we didn't walk around after dark. There's also a convenience store in the lobby.
Pros: Friendly and helpful staff.
Location: The Snow Monkeys are worth the walk. Beware though, it's about 2km from the entrance of the park until the first monkey sighting and the path is icy.
