This is my third time staying at the Hotel St. James. If you want a no-frills hotel that has nice staff, is clean and is in a wonderful location (5 minutes from Times Square and easy access to several subway stations and buses) , then this is for you.

This hotel is so close to Times Square and it's an easy walk to multiple restaurants, theaters, shops, etc. The room was clean and comfortable and the hotel provided luggage storage for early arrivals and later departures. The room was a little loud due to activity on the street outside but that's to be expected in this location. I would definitely stay here again!

This is an older hotel with little to no improvements in years. No ventilation in the room. The elevators are slow and one is very narrow- possibly an old luggage elevator? It is in a good area.

this is one of the best hotel you can stay in in new york and anyone who says different just doesn’t get new york city. the staff are so friendly. every morning you wake up and hear the desk attendant happily greet people and he even remembers everyone. he also was enthusiastically giving directions to travel inquiries. there is also a fabulous bodega right beside this place where you can buy anything your heart desires. the room we stayed in was very quiet and clean. anyone who has a complaint about this place probably complains about the qualities of new york that make it new york and they shouldn’t have a say on this hotels quality.

The location is excellent - a couple of blocks along from Times Square and the staff were welcoming and informative. Any help was sent immediately. I would thoroughly recommend this quirky old hotel.

Older building but kept up very well. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The room we were in was updated. A little small only a desk, night stands, and closet but worked for us. We weren’t spending much daytime in the room. Nice to have the noon checkout.

The room was overheated and the steam radiators were banging even though there was no reason to be heating (no controls in the room). The heat meant we had to open windows, which is not a good idea in New York, since the streets are loud all night. So hardly any sleep. Great location, though.

We were very pleased with our stay. Good value for the price. Nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. My only complaint was the clanky radiator that woke me up a few times during the night.

Perfectly located for walking to Times Square, midtown, Central Park, the Moma… everything we wanted to visit during our stay. The room was super clean and simple. We opened the window when it got a little warm. No mini-fridge, so no leftovers! Would stay again and recommend.

Its really loud in the hall ways..door's slamming alot and the doors are heavy and its loud. I would suggest small refrigerators in the rooms. The staff was amazing though and its really close to alot of things. The deli next to it is convenient and has great food til late in the night. I would stay here again

Booked this property to share NYC with my family- husband and 2 teens. It was so convenient and we were close to everything. Room was spacious enough for the four of us. Staff were absolutely wonderful, especially Joey; but everyone we interacted with was polite and helpful. Would definitely stay again!

Very basic hotel, but clean and a great location in the theatre district. My only complaint is that there is no coffee anywhere in the property-not in the rooms, not even the lobby. There is coffee you can buy in an eatery next door, but for someone like me who staggers blindly to the coffeemaker the minute I wake up, this was very annoying. Otherwise was pleased, would stay again.

This is an affordable, a little older spot with few amenities but is quiet, clean and most convenient. And the staff is so very helpful! If you want an excellent location and can be comfortable in a very simple (no refrigerator or coffee maker) lodgings close to Times Square and the metro but away from the craziness and noise, this is your place.

The hotel is very close to Times Square and was very clean. We felt very safe walking around even late night. But there was no bar as advertised, the bar was for decoration only and had a sign that said "No drinking, for decoration only" on it. That was something I looked for upon booking so we could have a drink and maybe work in the study on premises. There was absolutely no decor whatsoever, the walls were gray and the furniture looked like it came from Goodwill. Again clean, but felt a little like hostel. Bed was comfy but very squeaky so when I got up at night I felt like I was going to wake my friend up. Thin walls. Definitely budget friendly and the location can't be beat! But I missed the luxury of staying in a hotel. When we asked the desk clerk for ice his response was "what for?" For my drink. So he told me to go get it myself behind the bar which really is not a bar. We went behind the bar and got our own ice! The place was clean and quaint, but very old.

This hotel is dirty and not in a condition that it should be accepting guests - its an old, sad building. The heat is not controllable and had to sleep with the windows open to regulate temps, and there was no hot water and the room was in very poor shape - would highly recommend NOT staying here

Highly recommend this hotel! The front desk is extremely friendly, welcoming and accommodating! I felt at home and didn’t want to leave. The room was clean and had a classic look. It’s very close to Times Square and many food places/tour busses.

I was very upset by the sheet, it was disgusting. There was someone's hair on the sheets. When they asked to change the bed, the “clean” one also had hair, even a whole clump of hair. I had to sleep in my clothes, it’s a pity that we left a bad impression on the children, they were upset.

If you want a hotel in or near Time Square but don't want to remortgage your house, this is the place for you. We were a bit worried before checking in that it would be a bit of a s-hole due to the good price and location but it far exceeded expectations. Room was recently renovated and very clean with plenty of space. Staff were helpful and friendly - special mention to Joey who greeted everyone entering and leaving with a joke or funny remark. Will definitely stay here again if visiting New York.

The common spaces, like halls and elevators, were tired and worn, but care had been taken to update and freshen the rooms. Our room was simple, but clean and met our needs. The bathroom desperately needs a shelf or somewhere to put your toiletries though! Overall, we were happy with our stay and the hotel was a good deal for the price.
