Nordborg Castle, built in the 1200s, overlooks Nordborg Lake at the edge of the town centre. Today it houses a prestigious boarding school admire its architecture from outside. Meander along the town’s streets to the medieval Nordborg Church, one of several interesting area churches. Another worth seeing is Egen Church, home to some of Denmark’s finest preserved horse stables.
Make the short journey west to the village of Holm and visit Jollmands Gaard. Guided tours of this half-timbered and hook-shaped barn give an insight into rural life on Als. Nearby is the Hjortspring Boat, a re-creation of a Scandinavian canoe-style vessel that dates back to about 350 B.C. and was discovered in a nearby bog.
Visitors of all ages will have fun at the hands-on science and discovery centre Universe. Experience its industrial museum, brain-twisting puzzles, science experiments, 5-D simulator, giant hamster wheel and virtual reality games. The park opens from mid-April to mid-October. Nature flourishes in and around Nordborg. Spot Neolithic Age landmarks and the Østerholm Castle Ruin while walking in Nørreskoven Forest. Go birding and rowing at lakes such as Mjels Sø and Oldenor. Købingsmark Beach has fine golden sands, camping and uninterrupted views of the Little Belt.
Nordborg is part of the Syddanmark region off the southeastern coast of the Jutland Peninsula. From Copenhagen use public transportation to reach Bøjden and then catch a ferry to Als. The predominantly flat terrain and light traffic make this an ideal destination to enjoy by bike.
