Sand dunes in Ohio?! Who knew...

This is the beach left behind 11,000 years ago by the receding waters of Lake Warren. The waters receded back to the current Lake Erie, leaving behind the Great Black Swamp, which measured 120 miles long and 40 miles wide. The one oasis from the muck and the mire was an oak-covered savanna with sand dunes that is now Oak Openings Metropark.

I love to bike through this beautiful metro park.

The unintended yet stunning results of park rangers planting 1000's of pine trees in the 1930's-50's as an attempt to curb soil erosion of the sandy grounds at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.
