Russian Admiralty

The architecture in St Petersburg is truly astonishing but I think this is part of my favourite building. This is the stunning gold spire of the Admiralty Building, HQ of the Russian Navy.

Admiralty building, St. Petersburg, Russia

The dome spires are a trademark of Russian clasicisism architecture. The most famous in St. Petersburg is the tower spire of the Admiralty building from first half of 18th century. It is plated in gold and called the Admiralty needle. The Admiralty was founded in 1704 under the rule of the Tsar Peter the Great and it was the headquarters of the Emperor's Navy as well as the docks.

Across the Neva river you can see another mighty spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral on the island with a fortress bearing the same name.

You can enjoy this view from the rooftop arcade of near St. Isaac's Cathedral.
