Not the place you want to stay even for short time
I liked the price $26/night and that was a mistake I made. It is bearable if you are a single young man staying for a night before the flight next morning. But it is definitely not the kind of place you would want to bring your family to.

Alajuela is a better place to stay the night before flying out. We enjoyed the parade on April 11.

Usability before comfort
Got there at 2am and the "receptionist" opened the door. Didn't speak any language and wasn't expecting us: "hotel is booked completely". So instead of the private room we booked we got a 6 bed dorm. We only wanted to catch 3 hours of sleep before heading out so we didn't start arguing. Charged us 10$ instead of 13$.
Close to the airport (have change because the taxi drivers won't have any! It will be 4300 colones with the meter/Maria)
Hotel Cortez Azul is ok if you just need a place to sleep before/after a flight, but not for more. The bathroom was not well maintained, they asked for cash payment but did not have change when I arrived at 2am. But the guys at the reception were very friendly and polite, they took part of the payment at checkin and let me pay the rest at checkout since we didn't have change. It might be a good place for 1-2 guys who need cheap accommodation.

Rip off and double bookers
My mom booked the place for me en route to san jose so I would not stress on place to stay, when I got there they said card was not charged and I needed cash..then they lied about exchange rate which I called them on which had them backpedalling with excuses, and in the end they charged my moms card too....for them to do that to a single dad travelling with kids shows what kind of people they are....sad
I arrived very late at night, the whole place was dark. After ringing the bell several times and several minutes later, a man named Christoph came to answer the door. I had to fill in my information and pay for the stay. For my room, I paid part of it in US dollars and part in colones. The colones I owed was 2500 but I had only 10000 colones. Christoph didn't have change, so he said he would give me the change of $7500 the next day. The next day when I went to get my change, it was another man at the reception and he gave me the change of 7000 colones. As my taxi was arriving, I didn't want to haggle over 500 colones, but I thought it was very dishonest of them. I would not be back.

If you are not fussy about noise and want a quick overnight stay, no fuss and independence then this is a place to stay. Breakfast is mediocre. Good for younger hostelers who are looking for inexpensive lodging
