"Beautiful property, grounds are kept beautifully. Dinner was fresh and delicious. Breakfast was only good but no complaints for the price. The room was spotless and had two beautiful comfortable robes and toiletries. We would absolutely stay again and highly recommend for a lovely hacienda experience. "
"Another return visit, and I'd come back a third time without hesitation.
If you're exploring Uxmal, the Ruta Puuc, or the broader region, The Pickled Onion is simply the right place to stay. The huts are rustic and charming — simple, colorful, and comfortable with AC and a fridge — exactly what you need after a day of archaeological sites.
The pool is a genuine pleasure in the evenings, and the restaurant consistently surprises with inventive offerings that punch well above what you'd expect from a property of this size.
The owners clearly want guests to make the most of the area. An introductory note at booking and a well-stocked room binder provide genuinely useful orientation — not boilerplate.
One practical note: I messaged twice through Hotels.com and once via their contact form to arrange a guide in advance and received no response. Once on site, they were happy to help immediately. If pre-arrival logistics matter to you, plan to sort them on arrival or find another channel.
A wonderful, characterful base for one of the Yucatan's most rewarding stretches of territory."
"This is a excellent, clean, and modern hotel with kind and helpful staff. However I had a major issue with booking on Expedia! Once I confirmed the booking (pay upon arrival) the hotel messaged me and demanded I issue them a 50% deposit outside of the Expedia app in order to hold the booking for me if I arrived any later then the 3PM check-in time. This is highly irregular behavior and totally unprofessional. I have never had any other hotel do this anywhere in the world."
"We stayed in 4 of these new hotels within 2 weeks. This one was empty and felt sad to be so forgotten and unused after a year.
The hotel DESPERATELY NEEDS SIGNS ON THE ROAD. You have to call for directions. Google Maps is wrong and staff knows this. Unlike every other hotel, this was unmarked and we spent over an hour trying to navigate without a WiFi signal.
The road to the hotel is long with blind spots. It will take 20 min from the road. Not sure who planned that absurd bike line but a two lane would feel safer.
The price and pool, amenities staff are great but wow, but a sign on the road or send txts to guests like the others did.
Food was best here. "
"Room has windows on all sides, and mine had other rooms all around. Folks were walking around at night and early in the morning with lights. I didn’t sleep well. Breakfast was fine, but not great. "

What are holiday rentals like in Santa Elena?
Holiday rentals are privately owned properties you can book for a few days, or a quick weekend, in Santa Elena. Holiday rentals offer extras such as laundry facilities and kitchens so your stay will be comfortable. If you're concerned about a sanitised environment, a holiday rental can offer a sense of security away from public hotel lifts and busy front desks while still allowing you to travel. You'll also find more space in a holiday rental than in a standard hotel, which is another reason why a holiday rental is a popular option for families.
