Many small local shops in the area
If you're keen for an immersive experience in the local life then this is the place for you. You'll get to practice your Mandarin and have the opportunity to enjoy the bustling sound and smell of the local life. I enjoyed being able to walk out early in the morning to buy my own local breakfast which I love. Or walking across the street to get my hair washed (+ 30mins head massage) and blown for RMB39. But that's about the only positive (out)side of this hotel. The interior is old, very old. The pictures I saw online? They probably took those 30 years ago when it was new. Initially they offered me a room away from the elevator (noise) but when I heard it was 517 I asked for a different room. I mean, have you seen 1408? I was glad I got another room because getting into the elevator and walking along the dark dank corridor and entering a very old hotel room was enough to make my skin crawl. And then there was the smell and weird sounds. Oh don't worry, once you get used it you won't even remember they're there. The completely cracked mirror in my room was a bit creepy though - I mean what happened there? Did a couple fight in the room because someone was having an affair? Was someone playing baseball and accidentally broke it? These questions are going haunt me for life. Avoid bouncing on the beds because you could get hurt. Strictly for people who like sleeping on hard floors - it'd be like just like home. Here's the thing, I knew what I was paying for and couldn't complain.
