The historic fishing port of Skerries is situated on a peninsula about 15 miles north of Dublin city in the Republic of Ireland. A visit to this small town guarantees breathtaking views of the coast and an uncomplicated pace of life. With a colourful history behind it, the town is now a popular seaside resort.

Overlooking the Irish Sea, with a series of small islands accessible just off the coast, you’ll find Skerries is a prime spot for bird watching, as well as country walks and golf. But it’s not just nature on offer here – you will also love its quirky restaurants, cafes and shops, and the town even hosts an annual motorbike festival.

History of Skerries

As the legend goes, St. Patrick first arrived in Ireland via Skerries, landing on the nearby Church Island. The town was also the location for the Vikings’ first raid on Ireland.

It is only in the last century that Skerries has become a popular seaside resort, and has developed many activities to keep its visitors entertained including golf, sailing, motorbiking and well-maintained paths for unbeatable walks along the Irish coastline.

Explore the Islands Off Skerries

Every time you stroll along the beach you will be graced with the romantic views of the islands that help sit invitingly just out to sea. These five uninhabited islands make for a striking and poetic sight. Nature lovers will be excited to learn that a range of wildlife lives here including the largest breeding colony of Roseate Terns in Europe. You can even take a guided boat tour and visit the unmanned lighthouse on Rockabill Island.

Skerries Mills

The Skerries Mills, located in the centre of town, are certain to delight historians. Visible from miles around, the windmills that stand here are iconic Irish landmarks. They once powered the town’s flour production and are still in action today. A visit to the mills will give you a glimpse of Skerries, as it would have appeared in the 18th century. A fun and informative family day out, why not grab lunch in the Watermill Cafe afterwards?

Festivals in Skerries

The keen mechanic and motorcyclist will definitely want to attend the annual Skerries motorcycle race, ‘Skerries 100’. A great spectator’s event with a buzzing atmosphere, this festival is now part of the town’s heritage and has been held here every July since 1946.

Skerries is also home to the annual Soundwave Festival that blends an eclectic range of music acts with arts and crafts activities. It’s great fun for the whole family, and a wonderful way to support the local music scene. You may even find an international act or two!

Shopping in Skerries

While a short drive into Dublin will take you to all the high street stores you know and love, Skerries has a wonderfully quaint selection of independent curiosity shops. Find a frock in one of the town’s clothing stores, or browse through wooden toys and old-fashioned sweet shops with the kids. You could even pick up some local art as a souvenir.

Enjoy Skerries

With so much on offer in Skerries, and Dublin just a short drive away, you’ll get a little of everything in this quaint seaside town. Book your trip today.
