Set between sprawling green landscapes and an arm of the Limfjord, nature is in abundance in Skive. From castles, limestone caves and museums, to beaches and fishing, split your time between activities on land and sea. Choose Skive as a base for exploring the many characterful towns in the northern section of the Central Denmark Region.
Stroll around central Skive to browse antique stores and fashion outlets. Skive Kirke and Vor Frue Kirke are two striking churches surrounded by lush lawns. Catch a show at Skive Theatre and view art and natural history exhibits at Skive Museum. Art fans should watch for the 11 Stars of Skive, a series of sculptures decorating the town’s roundabouts.
For outdoor activities stroll along the shores of Skive Fjord. Alternatively, rent a kayak to cruise over the fjord’s tranquil water. Go for a swim during the summer months at beaches such as Skive Strand, Marienlyst Strand and Lyby Strand. Fish for crabs at Glyngøre Harbour. Be sure to sample the Limfjord oysters.
A very popular attraction in this region of Midtjylland is Mønsted Limestone Caves, one of the largest limestone mines in the world. Inside the caves are 37 miles (60 kilometres) of paths, a tourist train and an underground cinema. Watch as hundreds of bats fly around quarries at Daugbjerg Limestone Cave. Take the children to spot troll dolls on the Trolderuterne troll walking routes.
Journey back to the Middle Ages at Spøttrup Borg, a 16th-century castle with a moat, well-preserved ramparts and arrow slits. The castle museum offers a glimpse into historical life at the castle. Its ornamental garden overlooks a nearby lake. Tarok Museum, dedicated to a champion racehorse, is also worth visiting.
Reach Skive by flying to Aarhus or Aalborg and using public transportation from there. Holstebro, Ulfborg and Viborg are all less than a 1-hour drive away.
