"Clean room, No Wi-Fi, No restaurant, looks like it has been closed for some time, except when used for breakfast, pile of mattresses in reception area bit off putting, parking for bikers was excellent with the ability to park in a secure area provided by staff. Reception was a bit confusing would have liked to have been informed about how the Breakfast worked and what time etc. I would say in its heyday it was an impressive place. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, you get a clean room, helpful staff and secure bike parking plus its great value."

"Clean room, a good heater and shower the breakfast was ok. My room was overlooking a housing estate but it was very quiet (Thursday) not sure what it would be like noise wise on a weekend though."

Tom, the host, was a real gentleman and couldn’t do enough to help, which made the stay even more enjoyable. "Extremely disappointed - spa and pool closed due to building work, not clearly stated on Expedia. Specifically booked for these facilities after a very long drive. Hotel needed updating and didn’t feel immaculately clean. Front desk was a mess. Paid £144 for one night in a room that felt like a Premier Inn room with a fridge added. Stains on carpet, no pictures or nice touches apart from robes and slippers. Sofabed looked tired and old. Cooked breakfast was good but continental had only mandarin segments - no other fruit and no choice of cereals or pasties. Dining room was bland and dark with no atmosphere - we asked to put music on as it was deathly quiet. Best thing was free parking in a lovely historic town and the shoe shop opposite which was a Sketchers outlet selling end of line with at least 50% discount. Thai restaurant a few doors down from hotel was excellent with outstanding food. Wouldn’t stay again. "

"Friendly, helpful, welcoming staff. Comfortable rooms with good ensuite facilities at a great price. Restaurant has excellent dishes at good prices and the bar serves a good range of drinks again at good prices. A Continental Breakfast is included and there is no cooked breakfast option. The only drawback is the lack of a lift and one or two floors are a bit unveven but to be expected at over 400 years old. "

"Clean and lovely. Hotel is a historic charm. Do not expect corporate hotel, this is VERY old but delightful. There is no sound proofing, no even floors etc. If you are dull and complain about minor traffic noise etc, do not even bother staying here. This is a place for people who love history and appreciate the engineering of yesteryear. Staff were helpful. "
