Welcoming host, lovely old hotel Only stayed 1 night and it was good for the money. Comfortable bed, good bathroom Excellent breakfast spread, never seen such a good range of cereals and fruit at breakfast I don’t have cooked but from what I could see everyone seemed happy with the cooked breakfast

This place looked great online, but disappointed in every area. It has potential but is very outdated and tired. Wifi & TV didn't work, bathroom had a "spongy" floor, breakfast was mediocre. And there was pretty much zero happening in the town- not this fault of course- we stayed there because we did some tours in area. Pros: it had free parking and the owners/managers were very nice and accommodating. But sadly, that didn't make up for the price we payed and the overall experience.

The hotel is a pleasant old building. It is definitely tired and overdue for a refreshing overhaul. That said, the staff were so accommodating and helpful that they made up for the buildings shortcomings. I would not hesitate to stay here if I was passing through again.

Run by a lovely family. This hotel is right on the John o’Groats trail (and in the centre of Tain) and provided a very comfortable nights stay after a long days walk. I noticed it also provides /thinks of the details that not all hotels (along the trail) do…. Bottled water, big pack of shortbread, giant tv (not the tiny wee ones you often get on the wall), alarm clock, in shower mat….

The staff are very nice and friendly and are doing their best with what is available. The single room I stayed in was very poor and the bathroom was the worse I have ever seen.

On arrival I was upgraded to “the boardroom “. Great but the downside was a TV the did not work because of the aerial connection. Lovely big bathroom with new fitttings, but the bath did not drain.

Staff good but hotel not! Avoid.

Very dated hotel with too many issues to mention. The main issues was the food was not good, the restaurant lit a fire which smoked out the whole restaurant, with fire doors being propped open and fire alarm not in use. The room was dated and in need of much needed spring clean as a minimum. Woke up to bugs in bed which was acknowledged by staff as a problem. The manager and staff were friendly and seem really nice people but let down but poor decisions and a tired looking hotel. Will not be staying here again.

Poor hygiene

I stayed in room 23. On the last night I woke up all itchin to find bite marks on my legs and chest. Then to my shock I saw bed bugs crawling over the pillow and quilt. I did complain to management (think his name was Sam) and showed him some of bugs which I placed in a glass tumbler. He apologised and immediately offered compensation due to the distress and awful experience. We also spoke at length about possible infection of all my clothing. After several emails by me complaining the Royal Hotel said at the very least i should have a full refund. I gave this infi to Hotels.com and a full refund was given. Due to non communication from the Royal Hotel I feel I need to let everyone know about the total lack of customer service from the hotel management. Avoid this place.

Appalling Attitude of the Hotel Manager

I was so incredibly disappointed with the Royal Tain. I inadvertently booked the wrong date for my son to stay on his charity walk from John O'Groats to Land's End. I realised immediately and phoned the hotel to explain. They said they had availability for that night (in June) but they couldn't change the date from August (which I had booked inadvertently) as I had booked it through a third party agent. So I contacted Hotel.com who were very helpful and contacted the hotel to say they were happy to make the change if the hotel were. However the hotel manager refused to change the booking and so I have had to pay for a night stay in August when my son by that point was walking in Devon. I think the attitude of this hotel was appalling and I would not recommend it at all.
