"Last week I attended a wedding at “The Principal Hotel” in Columbia, Illinois. I would like to start with the owner and the hotel staff. The way they greeted us made us feel truly welcome. The venue was a converted Catholic Abbey and school. All facets of the wedding from the wedding party dinner, the wedding, the social hour, the catered banquet, and the DJ services went off without one glitch. The on-site restaurant was superb and catered delicious food. The hotel was as detailed as you would expect it to be from a long past era. I believe each large room had previously been a classroom. The main thing I noticed was the true quality of the carpentry done by masters that took exceptional pride in their work. Old class pictures, a trophy case, small chair desks, wall lockers, library books, even the old pull out bleacher facings. Quite a nostalgic trip into my memory. I loved every moment of it. I cannot express my appreciation of The Principal Hotel enough. All I can say is wow! Wow! WOW!"

The rooms are the true showstopper. Opening the door felt less like entering a hotel room and more like being transported to a high-end, 1960s Mad Men-inspired apartment. The aesthetic is a masterclass in mid-century modern design, featuring rich wood paneling, deep jewel tones, and opulent finishings that scream Don Draper excellence. The furniture feels substantial and curated, not mass-produced, with tactile fabrics and silhouettes that anchor the space in that golden era of design. And then, there is the bathroom. I can say, without hyperbole, that this is the best bathroom of any hotel we’ve ever stayed at. It is an absolute sanctuary. The design continues that opulent, retro-modern theme with stunning tiling and heavy, brushed brass fixtures that feel incredible to use. It’s spacious and bright, featuring a vanity area that actually allows you to spread out. The shower pressure was perfect, and the high-end amenities (Malin+Goetz) were the cherry on top. It’s the kind of bathroom that makes you want to renovate your own home the second you leave. The 21c St. Louis manages to thread the needle between a serious art gallery and a cozy, nostalgic retreat."
