Things to do in Montopoli in Val d'Arno

As one of the most recognizable buildings in Europe, the Leaning Tower of Pisa attracts visitors from across the globe. It is actually the freestanding, Romanesque campanile (bell tower) of the majestic Duomo in Piazza dei Miracoli. While its architecture and history are fascinating, most people come here just to observe and photograph the curious tilt of this Italian icon.

The Arno River travels gently through Florence on its 150-mile (240-kilometer) journey from Mount Falterona to the Tyrrhenian Sea. During Roman times this was a significant resource to the city and allowed merchants to bring wealth by trade links with the Mediterranean. Walk the banks of the Arno River today to see iconic bridges and resplendent palaces. Cruise the river waters by boat and rafting tours.

Unlike the paved piazzas with fountains that Italy is known for, Piazza dei Miracoli has expansive manicured lawns and is surrounded by ancient walls. Pull up a seat at a pavement café, sip a strong espresso and people-watch in one of Lucca’s most beautiful squares. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is enclosed by brightly colored buildings of uneven heights. It was built on the ruins of a second-century Roman amphitheater where chariots raced. More maudlin, gladiators once fought to the death in front of crowds of up to 10,000 spectators within the piazza’s walls.

At the heart of San Gimignano’s historic old town is the handsome Piazza della Cisterna. This lively public square has been a popular gathering place since it was laid out in 1200s. Once peppered with taverns and workshops, today it presents a striking collection of mostly 13th-century gateways, towers and palaces. Piazza della Cisterna also hosts annual fairs and festivals.
