Nearly 2,000 years ago, this was the site where tens of thousands of spectators would flock to see gladiators in combat, public executions, and the re-enactment of famous battles. Construction on the Colosseum was finished back in the year 80 AD, and while these days the crowds may not visit to enjoy the spectacles of the blood sports of ancient Rome, huge numbers still visit this famous spot to see the great structure still standing.

So named because it stands at the junction of three different roads, the Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome and a popular attraction.

Though not as old as some of the ancient monuments you’ll find across this historic city, the Piazza Navona is nonetheless a beautiful spot. Surrounded by façades built back in the 17th century when Pope Innocent X commissioned such legendary artists as Bernini, Borromini and Rainaldi, this space is a testament to Rome’s artistic heritage.

You don’t have to walk far when in Rome to stumble upon towering architectural masterpieces that remain great monuments to ancient Rome to this day. Yet none is more revered than the magnificent temple to the Roman gods, the Pantheon (which in Latin means “for all gods”).

This legendary staircase was first dreamt up back in the 1700s. It was then that architect Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi came up with a plan to design and build 138 steps to make it easier for locals to reach the Trinita dei Monti church. With their curves, straight lines, vistas and terraces, the stairs blend beautifully into the surrounding piazza.

Amble along the pathways and lawns, view a collection of stunning Renaissance masterpieces at the Galleria Borghese and check out rare pre-Roman artifacts at the Museo Nazionale Etrusco.

Almost every visitor who steps foot in Rome finds themselves at this busy piazza at some point.
