With a capacity of more than 50,000 spectators and a history that goes back nearly to the beginning of Australia’s national sport, Adelaide Oval is an important city icon. Today, Adelaide Oval is the home ground for both of Adelaide’s AFL football teams, the Adelaide Crows and the Port Adelaide Power. When a 550-metre stretch of one of Adelaide’s main streets was closed off to cars in 1976, it created more than just a premier shopping precinct. It fused a century of history with contemporary cosmopolitan entertainment, making Rundle Mall the heart of the city.

Adelaide is home to Australia’s only not-for-profit zoo, a leader in modern zoological techniques. The Adelaide Zoo features some 300 species, with a total of 1,800 animals inhabiting over eight hectares ( 20 acres).

Stretching from North Terrace up to the River Torrens, the spacious university grounds are an interesting place to visit for historical landmarks and the buzz of the institution’s research and learning.

Victoria Square marks the centre of Adelaide and is home to many of the city’s most significant buildings. Walk past the Supreme Court of South Australia, the Federal Court of Australia, the Adelaide General Post Office and the office of the Premier. Looming high above you, see the picturesque spire of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier.
