2. Brandenburg Gate

This enormous monument in the form of a neoclassical arch constructed from sandstone, is intrinsically linked with the history of Berlin and Germany. Built over two centuries ago, in 1791, the Brandenburg Gate was originally constructed to mark the entrance to Unter den Linden, Berlin's grandest boulevard. The arch was also intended to be a symbol of peace. There is a clear Greek influence in this monument, with the design of the Brandenburg Gate closely corresponding to the Acropolis in Athens.

6. Reichstag Building

The Reichstag is one of Berlin’s most historic landmarks. Completed in 1894 following the establishment of the German Reich, the neo-Renaissance building’s role as the home of German Parliament was short-lived. In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler blamed a devastating fire in the Reichstag on a group of Communists and radicals, a pivotal moment in his journey towards total control.

7. Berlin Wall Memorial

The Berlin Wall separated capitalist West Germany from Communist East Germany for many decades. The wall was originally constructed along a street called Bernauer Strasse in 1961, instantly separating thousands of friends and families. Once the wall had been constructed, the neo-Gothic church that stood in the area became essentially stranded in no man’s land—instantly taking on the status of a symbol of a truly divided city. This landmark was eventually destroyed by the East German government just four years before the wall came down.

8. Museum Island

Museum Island (Museumsinsel) is located in central Berlin in the River Spree. The island, as the name would suggest, boasts a collection of excellent museums. In particular, there are five world-class museums located at the northern end of the island, which were built between 1824 and 1930. It is not merely the content of the museums that is of interest—the architectural value of the buildings is also vast, and they also reflect an evolution in the design of contemporary museum development.
