Top places to visit

1. Wailea Beach

A wide expanse of soft, pearly white sand is the jewel in the crown of Wailea Beach. This palm-fringed paradise is the stuff of dreams and keeps this fashionable resort firmly at the luxurious end of the travel market. The community offers all the amenities you could wish for to enjoy an idyllic, relaxing holiday on one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in Maui.

3. Keawakapu Beach North

Keawakapu Beach in southwest Maui is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of some of the more crowded beaches nearby. Also as it’s wider than its sandy sisters, locating the perfect spot to sit back and soak up the sun won't be an issue. Impressive beach houses, restaurants, apartments and hotels line the beachfront while palm trees are dotted along the shore, providing shade for those who like to venture out in the early morning to do some yoga on the cushiony sands.

4. Maluaka Beach

The calm, temperate waters and sheltered location of Maluaka Beach make ideal conditions for attracting Hawaii’s famous green turtles. Part of Maui’s popular “Turtle Town” which runs from Nahuna Point to Black Sand Beach, Maluaka’s discreet entrance is easy to miss, making it less crowded and more laid-back than some of its better-known neighbours.

5. Molokini

The Molokini Island Preserve was set up to safeguard the fragile ecosystem of this partially submerged volcanic crater, a crescent-shaped atoll off the south-western coast of Maui surrounded by turquoise sea. It is not possible to set foot on the island itself, so the only way to appreciate its breathtaking natural beauty is to book a boat tour. These leave daily from the harbour at Maalaea, Makena, Lahaina and Kihei, so it’s easy to find a schedule and itinerary that fits in with your plans.

True: You can snap great shots of Molokini—a horseshoe-shaped crater off Maui’s southern coast—from La Perouse Bay, Makena Beach, and all of Wailea (to say nothing of some shots you can grab from upcountry and Haleakala summit). But to do this marine reserve justice, it’s best to hop on a boat and see it up close. The Kai Kanani provides just that, with two daily snorkeling tours departing from Makena’s Maluaka Beach and taking visitors to some of the preeminent snorkeling and diving destinations on Earth. While the crater alone makes for excellent photographs, it’s the underwater gems that you’ll want to share with others and remember for yourself, from manta rays as large as capes to Hawaii’s state fish, humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
