Stroll amongst tropical plants, rose gardens and succulents in this huge garden centre northeast of the inner city. Palmengarten, which means “palm garden”, has rare sub-Antarctic species, enormous cacti and thousands of flowers in outdoor gardens and greenhouses. The 19th-century complex is spread across 22-hectares (54-acres).

The Alte Oper is a cherished concert hall that was destroyed in World War II and faithfully rebuilt. The theatre’s lavish interior is decorated with balconies, columns and sculptures.
