Things to do in Valparaíso

Nestled in a valley framed by dramatic Andean peaks that reach over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) in height is Ski Portillo. This is one of the oldest ski areas in South America. Around 25 feet (7.6 meters) of snow falls on the slopes of Ski Portillo every season, which creates skiable terrain from July to September. Strap on your skis, carve up marked and backcountry trails and bask in the spectacular surroundings.

Acapulco Beach borders the cool water of the Pacific Ocean. Its proximity to Viña del Mar’s city center makes it popular with locals and tourists alike. Visit Acapulco Beach for swimming, sunbathing and relaxed walks. Explore pretty gardens, watch local fishermen cast lines into the ocean and admire marvelous sunsets.

Anakena Beach is a stunning stretch of fine white coral sand dotted with palm trees that sway in the wind. Its soft sand is unusual for the island, whose coastline is otherwise rocky. Take a dip in the ocean water and dry off in the sun.

Found on the lower slopes of the Terevaka Volcano, the Rano Raraku volcanic crater is where Easter Islanders quarried rock to make their world-famous moai head statues. Today, 397 moai sculptures remain scattered on the site, many of which are incomplete. Inspect the vast range of moais, which includes the island’s largest statue and other distinctive figures.

A prominent and interesting landmark of Viña del Mar, Castillo Wulff has some of the city’s best coastal views and temporary art exhibitions. Look for this century-old castle sitting on a promontory of the city’s waterfront esplanade, with superb photo opportunities and the chance to sit and gaze out across the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

The largest spiritual site of its kind on Easter Island, Ahu Tongariki comprises a long platform and 15 carved stone figures, known as moai, of varying shapes and sizes. The indigenous Rapa Nui people used to congregate in this central location, which was the capital of the southeastern part of the island. Spend time learning about the ancient practice of crafting moai and discover what each statue symbolizes.
