Where to stay in Trang?

About Trang, Thailand

Trang is the name of both a city and a province in southern Thailand's stunning Andaman Coast region. Many passengers bypass Trang on their way to the better known resorts of Ranong, Phuket, and

The Manora art form unique to this area of southern Thailand consists of impromptu singing and graceful dancing. Manora musical instruments also accompany shadow plays where one puppeteer tells the story and operates all of the puppets behind a lighted screen. Three people play every part in the Li-kae Pa performances, which are particularly popular with the local Muslim population.

Swimming is the only way to reach the entrance to Morakot Cave, one of the best known of Trang's many surrounding ancient caves. Several rare trees grow on the white beach at one end of Morakot Cave, while the cave's other end is filled with emerald coloured waters. The cave is located on an island called Mook. Both the cave and the island are part of the larger Chao Mai Beach National Park. Another island at this park, Chueak, consists of two smaller islands connected to each other and is surrounded by coral reefs.

Restaurants and Bars

Chinese coffee shops, known as Ko-Pii which are open until late at night are the liveliest gathering spots in the otherwise sleepy city of Trang. A couple of discotheques and a hotel karaoke bar are the only other nightlife options. Local cuisine is a unique mix of Indian, Chinese, Malay, and Thai. Ko-Pii shops serve up daily dim sum breakfasts, but there are also a few restaurants, which cater specifically to Muslims and vegetarians.

Shopping

Many Trang residents are descendants of mainland Chinese merchants and they continue to follow in their ancestors' footsteps by selling food and crafts at the lively night market. Commonly sold food items include seasoned roast pork, orange cake, and Khoa Chong coffee. Much of the clothing for sale is made from a type of cloth named after and woven in a Nayong village called Na Muensri.
