Discover the picturesque views, uncrowded slopes and fantastic off-piste terrain that make this ski area one of New Zealand’s best.

Treble Cone, the largest ski area in the South Island, is known for its excellent powder and exhilarating expert runs. Tackle intermediate and advanced downhill runs with a vertical drop of 2,300 feet (700 metres) or simply ride the chairlift and admire the stunning views over Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring.

Treble Cone has the highest recorded average annual snowfall of all the country’s ski resorts, averaging about 18 feet (5.5 metres) per season for a maximum depth of 10 feet (3 metres).

Spanning 1,360 acres (550 hectares), the ski area offers several beginner slopes and over 30 intermediate and advanced runs. The terrain is naturally varied and challenging, with plenty of steep slopes, undulating runs and narrow valleys. Head to the Saddle Basin, Summit Slopes or Motatapu Chutes for some of the most advanced terrain, including open powder faces, natural halfpipes and exciting drops.

Whether you’re skiing or just sightseeing, ride the Home Basin chairlift, which offers panoramic views from 5,740 feet (1,750 metres) above sea level. Walk to the Matukituki viewpoint for the best perspective of the dramatic surrounding scenery.

Although the resort primarily draws intermediate and advanced skiers, lessons are available for beginners. Investigate the purpose-built learner area near the base building, where you’ll find wide, gentle, well-groomed runs.

The area also offers fine free-riding terrain for snowboarders. Take on the numerous halfpipes on the upper mountain or head to the terrain park.

There are no accommodation on the slopes of Treble Cone, so most visitors go to Wanaka or Queenstown for nightlife and dining. Visit the Treble Cone cafeteria for lunch and snacks and bring your meal to the pleasant outdoor sundeck overlooking the slopes.

Treble Cone is located within the Southern Alps of the South Island, 14.5 miles (23 kilometres) from Wanaka and 56 miles (90 kilometres) from Queenstown. Enjoy the scenic drive from Wanaka as it winds around the edge of Lake Wanaka.
