Back in the day, the flight engineer was responsible for much of the plane's mechanical operation, including engines, fuel, electronics, hydraulics, lights, HVAC and more. It was considered an entry level position before you could graduate to first officer or pilot.
If you listened to rock music in the 1980's, you might recognize this view. Though in that case the tail number would have been "3MTA3". Decked out in 1960's United livery, this is the original 727 prototype that went on to carry some 3 million passengers over a 27-year career. Boeing built 1,832 727s, of which 69 are still in service (according to the latest airliner census). Its high-lift wing design enabled shorter take-offs and landings, bringing commercial jet service to smaller regional airports. Figure out where you've see this before?
