The University of Buenos Aires (Ciudad Universitaria de Buenos Aires) is a lively university campus spread across well-maintained parklands on the banks of the Río de la Plata (River Plate) in the city’s Nuñez neighbourhood. Get a feel for student life at this prestigious Buenos Aires institution and stroll around the surrounding memorial parks and nature reserves.
Within the campus, you can stroll down tree-lined pavements, past a “pabellón” consisting of three modern faculty buildings. Observe the flurry of activity between classes as students move between the buildings. Head to the nearby soccer fields to watch the university sports teams. In Pabellón III, you can visit the Museo de la Maquetas (Museum of Models), where architecture students display scale models of masterpieces by famed architects.
The university campus provides direct access to the Parque de la Memoria (Memorial Park), a riverfront urban park that acts as a solemn reminder of Argentina’s dictatorship years. Find the poignant monument embossed with the names of those who were killed or went missing between 1969 and 1983. Spot a series of modern sculptures and see what temporary art exhibitions are currently showing at the Sala PAyS gallery.
The Ciudad Universitaria de Buenos Aires is about a 20-minute drive from Buenos Aires’ city centre. Public buses stop at the campus and the closest train station is Estación Raúl Scalabrini Ortiz. The Museo de las Maquetas is open from Monday to Thursday and admission is free. The Parque de la Memoria and Sala PAyS are both open daily for free. While in Nuñez, consider visiting other nearby attractions. Spot waterfowl as you follow the trails that wind around the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Norte. Relax at the open-air swimming pools of Parque Norte or watch re-enactments of biblical events at Tierra Santa (Holy Land).
