A holiday in Vardø allows you to experience the Arctic climate and the area’s unique vegetation, which notably does not include trees. Outdoor fans should go hiking in Varangerhalvøya nasjonalpark (Varangerhalvøya National Park) or head out to sea to fish and watch the incredible wildlife.

Vardø is a town and municipality in Finnmark and Vardø town is situated on Vardøya. This is the oldest fishing town in Finnmark and the region has had extensive contact and trade with Russia in the east. The town is situated in the Arctic climate zone and the average temperature does not exceed ten degrees.

Enjoy a look back into the past with your visit to Vardø. Steilneset minnested (Steilneset Memorial) remembers the people who fell victim to the brutal witchcraft trials in Finnmark, while Vardøhus festning (Vardøhus Fort), erected in the 1300s, is Norway's easternmost and northernmost fort. At the Pomor Museum you can learn more about trade with Russia in the 1800s.

Vardø can be cold, even in summer. It is a good idea to pack warm clothing, especially if you are heading out to sea or going on long walks across the tundra. For unique bird life, a visit to Hornøya is highly recommended. The area offers a wide range of accommodation options, including hotels or simpler choices.

To get to Vardø from the UK, you will have to take an internal flight from one of the big cities to Vardø airport, which has connections to several surrounding towns in Northern Norway. If you arrive by air, hiring a car to get around the area is recommended. Alternatively, European Road 75 goes all the way to Vardøya, linked to the mainland via the Vardø tunnel, and the Hurtigruta boat also calls at Vardø.
