What would Versailles be without its palace? A fascinating city of history, culture and architecture that has so much to offer for curious visitors. It won't take you long to see why kings chose to live there!

No stay in Paris would be complete without a visit to the Palace of Versailles and its gardens. But the city itself is also well worth a visit. As it's steeped in history, it's also the perfect place to wander around and explore its irresistibly charming ancient neighbourhoods.

Of course, Versailles is famed for its palace, originally built as a simple hunting lodge by Louis XIII. But it was Louis XIV who oversaw the construction of the huge palace and its magnificent gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, which you can enjoy exploring. Also remember to visit the impressive hall of mirrors and the Grand Trianon, the "little palace with delightful gardens".

Versailles has also grown in step with its palace and will satisfy history and architecture lovers alike. The historic area of Notre-Dame, with its church and market, will delight curious travellers, who can learn all about the city's history in the Musée Lambinet. The area is also famous for its antique shops and you'll be captivated by its charming 18th-century town houses.

But it doesn't end there! Explore Old Versailles, in the southern part of the city, and you'll discover a legendary place full of history, the real tennis court, which was the scene of an important event in the Revolution of 1789. Then walk down rue de Satory and into the Potager du Roi, which is still run by the École Nationale Supérieure du Paysage, which is as amazing as it is mouth-watering. Finally, treat yourself to a breathtaking show at the Grande Écurie du Roi, where the Versailles Academy of Equestrian Arts puts on lavish routines with its renowned riders.

Versailles couldn't be easier to get to, being just next to Paris. Whether travelling to Versailles from central Paris, the airport (Orly or Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle) or from one of the central stations, you'll have no problem finding an RER (stop Versailles Rive-Gauche) or overground train (stops Versailles-Chantiers or Versailles Rive Droite) to get there. Those who prefer to drive will have no problem finding a space in one of the city's seven car parks.

"Nice hotel, clean and quiet, prompt staff. There was a septic or refuse smell walking out the back to the pool that might be less noticeable with fragrant trees/ bushes.
