Vilhelmina is a town in Lapland which originally started as a Sami village. The town offers several interesting cultural attractions that are well worth a visit. A number of these are even located within walking distance of one another.
Vilhelmina Church Town was built in the early 1840s so that churchgoers would have a place to stay when they came into town for services. Today the church village is still a lively locale which houses a local museum and an art studio. It's a great place to enjoy a coffee amongst some beautiful surroundings. The church town is especially lively during the summer.
Children are sure to appreciate the fantastic Sagostigen on Kyrkberget - a short walk through a forest full of fairy tales and mysterious figures. And while you're up on Kyrkberget, be sure to visit the old Sami Settlement. The Vualtjere Duodji Sami Association houses a showroom here where you can learn about the Sami building tradition.
Although the city offers many interesting museums and shops, no trip to Vilhelmina is complete without a bit of time in the great outdoors. During the winter, you can visit the Klimpfjäll or Kittelfjäll skiing facilities, which together offer 57 slopes. Or if cross-country skiing is more your thing, you can enjoy full access to eleven trails nearby. During the summer, you can walk or cycle along one of the many mountain hiking and biking trails, or visit Baksjötjärn - a central recreation area with a beach, outdoor gym and great spots for fishing.
Once you’ve got to Sweden, Vilhemina is easy to reach by plane or bus. The bus company Lapplandspilen offers departures from Stockholm and Arlanda Airport several times per week, or you can fly directly from within Sweden three days a week. You can also take the Inland Line from Stockholm all the way to Vilhelmina at several times of the year.
A weekend in Vilhelmina is highly recommended for all those who want to enjoy the Lapland nature and outdoor activities, while still having access to the variety of restaurants and shops that a small town has to offer.
