"In a word, Sumptuous.
This was my last night of a 34 day trip from Oregon to Denali park and back via the Klondike highway. I stayed in such a variety of lodgings.. but Balch was the capstone!
Historic building perfectly maintained. Elegant appointments, preserving (perhaps significantly improving?) the historic grandeur of the original venue.
Things to love:
-Fabulous antique building & grounds, full of antiques and beautiful art and local photography.
-Cost was magnificent. For the same price you can stay in The Dalles next to the freeway in a Super 8.. Drive 20 mins to Dufur!
-Quirky, tiny town setting that is very walkable and delightfully rural. Living history of wheat farming for the last century is on display one block away.
-Clean, fabulous room. Small; made for sleeping, with a tiny sink and mirror. Washrooms are shared with other rooms, down the hall.
-Local restaurant/bar is across the street for dinner. Perfect pub food.
-magnificent "basket" of breakfast is complimentary: grapes, yogurt, granola, fresh berries, fresh muffin, hard boiled egg, fine coffee/tea etc..
-clientele was quiet, intellectually interesting and delightful at Breakfast.
#1 - I slept so well here!
Things to know:
-no elevator. Main floor has stairs to enter, and is super spacious with parlor & living room and dining rooms.
-rooms are upstairs, and the other half are up a second flight of stairs. If your knees are troubled, pack in only what you'll need for the night!"
"Very clean and quiet. I got upgraded to a Deluxe King room and it was really nice and spacious. The staff were very friendly. Walking distance to shops and restaurants. I would definitely stay here again."
