Devon showing a small town or village

Life revolves around the water at this small Devon fishing village, which sits on the confluence of two rivers as they flow into the sea.

Located at the point where the Taw and Torridge rivers converge shortly before they flow into Bideford Bay, the small North Devon village of Appledore is surrounded by water. Learn about the village’s connection to the water and appreciate the glorious coastal views.

The inhabitants of the village of Appledore have long depended on the waters around them to make a living. Some residents would have worked as fishers, catching salmon, cod and bass, and collecting cockles and mussels. Others would have been employed in the Appledore Yard, which was founded in 1855 and was responsible for building hundreds of vessels including tall ships, superyachts and ferries. Ask locals to point out the modern-day Appledore shipyard, which still employs many residents.

Find out more about the village’s shipbuilding heritage at the North Devon Maritime Museum. Set in a classic Georgian building, the museum features exhibits on the maritime history of Devon, covering everything from Viking raids to 19th-century emigration. Take a stroll down to the boat-filled Appledore Quay. The picturesque quay occasionally hosts special events such as crabbing contests. Fishing excursions often depart from here too.

Wander around the steep, narrow streets. Discover the village’s arty side at Appledore Crafts Company. This cooperative craft gallery showcases the work of local artisans and artists, including ethically produced jewellery and hand-painted textiles. Look for several historic buildings, including the 1836-built St. Mary’s Church, which features colourful stained-glass windows. As you explore, keep watch for the Hocking’s Ice Cream van. Their award-winning ice cream has a huge fan base in South West England.

Appledore is located along the South West Coast Path, a long-distance walking trail that extends along the Devon and Cornwall coasts. Follow the trail from Appledore for stunning sea views.

If you want to get an idea of what Appledore is like before you visit, watch The Jacksons are Coming. This 2008 documentary follows the Jackson family as they search for a house in Appledore.
