No one at office, could not check in
We arrived at 8 pm. There was no one at the office or on site to check us in. Tried calling the office, no answer. Other guests tried to help, but to no avail. We had driven several hours through the mountains, but could not check in. Called hotels.com and they refunded with no fee, no questions asked. We ended up driving to the next town, and changed our weekend plans. It was disappointing after reading about the ranch online.

Harmels is a guest ranch at 8412 feet high, when it begins ton get cold we are required because of pipes that break in our water system to close down areas of the ranch. This is a wilderness operation, phones in each cabin are just not possible with current technology, and affordability.

Facelift Needed
Agree with recent visitors and their comments regarding how disappointing this once spectacular lodge was. I didn’t want to believe the negative reviews but they were all what we experienced. We stayed in one if the lodge rooms. Carpet dirty, tub and shower needs repair, lighting poor. Did not experience mice...but tons of gnats. Poor fishing conditions....

Everyone at Harmel's Ranch was very friendly and helpful. I was disappointed that the restaurant and the lounge were totally closed and unavailable due to the fact that they were closing in 2 weeks for the winter. I feel that I should have been made aware of this in advance. There was also no phone in the room or 24 hour assistance. With little to no cell service in this area, I feel that this is a possible safety issue. That said, I would return in the future, just earlier in the season.

We are located in a steep canyon wilderness area at 8412 feet, phone service here is difficult..

We didn’t get in. We called at 7:30 pm to confirm we were on our way. No one answered. We left a message telling them we would be there at 9:00. When we arrived at 9:00, no one answered the door. It was closed and dark. Then we called again, no one answered the phone again. We ended up going to Gunnison to stay the night. e would like a refund.

A little dated accommodations that were clean and comfortable. Ranch has many services available for the whole family.

Great location. The room was dirty and no daily cleaning. Lost power, a breaker blew, and no one answered the phone or was in the office at night to contact about getting it fixed.

Took the family an our dog. The staff was by far the best ive ever had in my travels. Food was excellent. Trout fishing the taylor river was good horse back riding was also fun. Will def return

Loved the location, staff was very friendly.Ultimately, my primary frustration involved booking this room and then receiving a call days later indicating that the Expedia site did not have the most up to date availability, thus the room I had booked for $135 was no longer available (despite my being able to book it online) and my only choice was a room for $179. At this point, my options for finding availability anywhere else was severely limited unless I wanted to pay $230+ a night. I really had no choice but to accept this. I did ask if they would be willing to honor the price I was quoted and booked and was told no, as the room I booked was a motel room and the new room was a cabin. While I fully appreciate that detail, it isn't my fault or responsibility to ensure availability is up to date on online booking sites. I liken it to something being advertised at an incorrect price - that isn't the consumer's fault and their decision to make a purchase is contingent upon the advertised price. Most companies will honor the quoted price given it is their error, versus expecting the consumer to suck it up. This put me in a position to pay more than expected and left me little time to make other arrangements. I honestly feel the company or their online booking site (Expedia) should have accepted responsibility for the error and honored the original price. Not doing so left me with a very poor impression and experience.

Thank you for your response. Because this incident took place over the phone, and no customers had actually shown up to the ranch needing to check in, we could not compensate you for a cheaper room. We are sorry that the rooms were unavailable, but we have never falsely listed our prices online. We are sorry that you felt inclined to pay a higher price, that was never our intention. At anytime the booking could have been cancelled at full refund. We are already looking into what caused this issue in the first place.

Beautiful location! On the river a ways out of town. Facility is a bit older but comfortable. Nice game room. Great nearby hiking Horse back ride fun with Dave as a great wrangler. Not all cabins have kitchens so make sure you clarify what you need.

Harmel’s is in a beautiful location and gave us good access to the Gunnison area. However, when we arrived we walked into our room which had not been cleaned, sheets were still dirty, old coffee was in the coffee pot, gum wrappers on tables and bugs were in our bed. SO GROSS! When we told the guy at the office he said - “oh would you like me to spiffy it up real quick?” Really? How about you actually clean the room between guests. We had even arrived late so they had plenty of extra time. Staff were also few and far between and we did not see housekeeping at all While we were there - we had trash cans overflowing by the end of our stay. Needless to say we were disappointed.

Thank you for your response. It is our intention to clean the rooms in between guests. However, it is not the office workers' responsibility. We, at the office, try to be as accommodating and helpful as possible. We are very sorry to hear that our housekeeping was not up to standards. We will take note of that and try to fix any future issues related.

The area is beautiful!!!!, but that's it. Our room was dirty, rundown, smelly, and old. No one came to clean, give us clean linens, new coffee, for coffee maker. Nothing!!! They have a restaurant on site, they told us they had a buffet breakfast for $12.00 per person, we go down for our breakfast buffet, which consist of cold eggs, no toast, cold hash browns, and cold bacon!!!!! They still charged extra for coffee!!! The people that work there don't care for anything!!! This place could really be special if the right people were running it. So SAD!!!!

The staff at Harmels Ranch cares about nothing more than our guests, we can assure that. We are so sorry to hear about your stay. We aim to give our customers an outdoor, rustic, and ranch-like appeal. That said, we care equally as much about making our guests stay joyous. We do intend to keep our cabins very clean, however, many of these cabins were built more than 100 years ago! Since then, most have been remodeled, but still remain rustic. We are located in the wilderness, which is what can be so amazing about our ranch.

Comfortable cabins
My family and I really enjoyed our stay at Harmel’s. The area is beautiful and there are many activities to do right at the resort. The cabins are comfortable and clean and made for a great weekend trip.

The desk charged us more than the rate advertised by $7 per night. The “main menu” was not available in the dining hall yet, as they were running behind on the start of “peak season “. The staff was excellent however and the location is outstanding.

Cabin was quaint but in need of upgrading. Carpet was disgusting. Glad I had my slippers. Would not walk on it without shoes or slippers. Walls very thin. Felt like we were in the same room with the cabin next door. I critter kept us up half the night. Was either trying to get into our doughnut box or was in the wall scratching to get out. Sounded like he was in the room, but didn't see him. Had to sleep with the bathroom light on to keep him quiet. Large window in front let cold air in as it wan't even sealed to the window frame. Would only stay here again in the facilities were redone.

Dear Kay, my name is Brad Roberts. My brother Steve and I own Harmels. I really feel your pain and we apologise. This year was very difficult in all ways. Steve retired and I had a heart attack. Good news though, Harmel's has new management, and renovation is going on now.

No reservation when we arrived although Harmel's had sent confirmation. Had to wait 45 minutes while a room was cleaned. Pool was freezing cold and filthy. Hot tub was OK but could tell water hadn't been changed in awhile. Cabin was clean but beds uncomfortable and carpets stained and frayed. Harmel's use to have amazing food...no longer...very mediocre and service struggled. Game room, restaurant etc. smelled heavily of smoke. It does sit on a river in a beautiful area. Too bad owners haven't kept it up. Will be staying at other resort cabins along the river next time.

This is an older, dirty poorly maintained property that is best avoided. The Expedia promotional as to room is very deceptive and the location of some of the rooms and proximity to the Taylor River is less than ideal.

The staff very young and unorganized. Need adult supervision and training to meet, greet and follow through. Waited forever in the dining room to be seated, get our meal and pay (over priced for a cold buffet breakfast that was not good). We upgraded to a cabin when we arrived as our one bedroom was dirty, dismal and depressing; paying far too much for the cabin that was left.. We will not return.

This was a good place to rest our heads. The staff was friendly but the property could use a little updating - it was clean though! We'd like to come back and stay in the summer for longer when we can explore more of what the property has to offer.

Too much money for what you get.
Do not drink the tap water. They should tell you this. Also there is carbon monoxide in the rooms 21 to 27. That building is also next to a dump. I real dump with a toilet, stereo, dishwashers etc.... They charge guests for ice. The kids that work there are wonderful young people. The maintenance man is a nice guy. Will, the young man who checked me in, is very capable and is a fine employee.

unfortunately we got skunked from the website using words like Ranch and Resort. The smell and cleanliness in the office and room worse than your grandmas attic times ten. we left at 5 am next day just to get out. We even looked up other hotels in the area to just cut our losses but everything was booked...this was awful place!!

Great place, we will be back.
We had great time, even though everything is on pricey side, we had great time walking/hiking, riding horses, swimming in the pool, dining by the river... just for such price level, I am used the stuff being on higher level as well - everybody was very new, no knowledge of the area and activities, they had trouble with every check after the meal, we always had hard time to obtain glass of water with our meal (which really should be always served immediately in high altitude resort in hot summer!), etc.

Great location and staff.
Very helpful staff answered lots of questions and tons of information about local hikes and amenities. Great pool and hot tub, however the room ran out of hot water pretty quickly. But the staff easily accommodated a late check out so that we could get morning showers. Will probably not return as the entire facilities do not recycle and I don't prefer to support places that are not doing their part to protect and preserve the environment.

Not what I expected for $120/ Night
When we arrived I could immediately see the dust on surfaces from where I was standing. There were several spider webs with spiders and cob webs as well...I did a scan of the floor to make sure there was nothing left behind that my small dogs could eat and under the bed dust ruffle looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in several months...Our overall impression of the room was very disappointing, especially for the price. I think a fair price would be no more than $60/night to stay in that room.

Everything we were expecting, great facility and restaurant on river, be sure to take a horse ride.
