As the capital and a major economic hub of Lampung, Bandar Lampung is a gem of a city seated upon the southern tip of Sumatra Island, in Indonesia. The blend of coastal and inland hill-side living gives a great atmosphere and setting to explore the area. You will find many ethnicities at work here, with the cultural influences resulting in some of the most beautiful architecture. The natural and cultural attractions in this area are all in close proximity to each other, making discovering the beauty of Bandar Lampung both convenient and extremely rewarding. Here we are taking a look at the highlights of Bandar Lampung, and advising you of the best things to see and do.
The city of Bandar Lampung is divided into two main regions, namely Tangjungkarang and Telukbetung. Tangjungkarang refers to the inland area at the foot of the hill. This is where you find the majority of hotels, the airport and the train station. Telukbetung is the coastal area encompassing the bay. Within the region there are numerous cultural landmarks.
Spa hotels in Bandar Lampung are plentiful. For the best range of spa hotels shop near the Lampung Provincial Museum. With full-service spa facilities, outdoor pools, saunas and in-house restaurants and coffee shops, the accommodation is truly top-class. Most hotels supply everything from wifi to cable TV with value added extras such as bathrobes and slippers.
There is also a great range of family friendly hotels within Bandar Lampung. Near the Krakatau Monument and Provincial Museum are some of the most luxurious accommodation providers. Your options range from 3-star providers, to 5-star family friendly resorts nestled in the mountains themselves. Airport shuttle services are given, as are many great extras such as cribs and infant beds when needed, rollaway beds and options where kids stay for free.
When Mount Krakatau erupted in 1883, a metal buoy from a lighthouse on an island nearby was tossed over 60 kilometres, or 37 miles, to shore. The area of the coast where it landed is now maintained as a monument, around which a small garden is built. Don’t miss the chance to see this reminder of nature’s power.
The Gita Persada Butterfly Garden, locally known as Taman Kupu-Kupu Gita Persada, is found at the foot of Gunung Betung. Within the grounds you can find over 180-species of Sumatran butterflies, which were once on the verge of extinction. The butterfly garden lies quiet far out of town, so it is best to rent a Ojek, otherwise known as a motorcycle taxi.
Within Chinatown of Telukbetung is the oldest Buddhist temple in Bandar Lampung. Thay Hin Bio Temple houses a range of magnificent religious ornaments and relics. It was built directly after the eruption of Mount Krakatau and runs numerous charitable activities during each Chinese New Year.
Don’t miss the chance to take home one of the many forms of kain tapis, traditional style of weaving. It is traditionally worn as a sarong and is seen as one of the prime symbols of Lampung. Most of the motifs are floral, however alternate designs are available sporting everything from snakes to ships and other mystical creatures.
Pempek is a local delicacy made from tapioca flour and fish which originated in Palembang. The Pempek prepared in Bandar Lampung is known to be some of the best in the country, so don’t overlook your chance to try it.
