Comfortable room in a nice town
Lovely clean room, windows really effective at blocking out the general street noise. Really nice town. Staff were rushed off their feet, but still did a good job serving everyone. Food was really good.
In an ideal world, there would be more accessible plugs in the room and the toiletries wouldn't all be individually wrapped in plastic.
Warm welcome from the staff, who made ever effort to make you feel at home. Lovely old hotel with character and the occasional squeaky floor board.
The food was excellent and I would highly recommend the hotel just on the excellence of the the food.
small room but no issue for solo traveller. Lovely spot in the centre of Middleton. Lots of places to visit on doorstep or within easy reach. Great service in the hotel, especially at breakfast
I really didn’t mind the hotel being a good 30 years out of date and in critical need of a revamp, or the old people home smell you get when you climb the stairs on the thread-bare carpet, as long as the bed was comfortable and I could get some sleep, especially after a 20 mile walk I had just completed.
Unfortunately, I think the last time the mattress was changed was before the turn of the century. It was horrible and unconformable. The springs where all protruding, it had zero cushioning left, was rock hard and tiny. I haven’t laid on such an uncomfortable bed in my life! And I don’t want to now what might have been living in it.
There is really no excuse for this, and frankly the cost of a new mattress is very small, especially compared to the bookings that should be rightly put off by my review. To me it showed a complete lack of care from the management about their guests…. Yes a hotel refurb will be very expensive, and you probably can't manage that, but new mattresses? Seriously, concentrate on the things that matter! Your primary object is to make sure people get a good night's sleep, after that its all window dressing.
As I said, the hotel is in real need of updating, which is a real shame as the food was beautiful! The bar is friendly enough, but again really outdated… who knows how old all the bar stools are, I suspect older than me, who is enjoying life in my 40s!
Staff were very nice. Food was very tasty. Our room was cold and our bedding damp. The fan in the bathroom did not work. The room is well overdue a makeover.

Great location
Great location and friendly staff. The decor and bathrooms are a little dated
Overall the Hotel, is in need of a total refurbishment. At £78, it is far to expensive. We would not recommend to anyone and would not be staying again, very dissatisfied.
great hotel lovely location and excellent food. I stayed the night we had heavy snow and the owner was brilliant in getting me out of 18inch of snow in his landrover

Old hotel in beautiful village with wonderful view
Did not get off to good start as our booking had been lost, we did not get the room we booked but were accommodated in the family room as it was the only one they had left. Breakfast was good but we waited an hour got it on Sunday
Hot water tap on shower became stuck on and they were waiting for the maintenance man still when we checked out.
Due to the fact they had lost our booking we were asked to pay again on checkout which we refused, they them the copy of our booking and left.
Three couples stayed for one night en route to Scotland.
Hotel is well placed in the heart of Middleton in Teesdale.
The inn is very traditional, with a lovely bar and separate restaurant. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent.
I booked the compact single room and it was very compact - in fact I couldn't sit on the loo with the door closed. But it was clean and the bed was comfortable (and the fact that I knew I was getting a compact room was a good thing). Good wifi, friendly, hard-working staff. I'd book again.
This hotel is ideally located for sightseeing around Teesdale and the northern Yorkshire Dales, and there is plenty to see in this area. The room was basic, with a flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, and an ensuite shower room. Decor is typical of a country hotel/pub. The staff were friendly and the service was good. There was a wide selection of home-cooked food, with locally sourced/produced ingredients, on the menu, and the meals I had were excellent. Prices for meals were reasonable. Breakfast was cooked to order and was also excellent.
Bodde på hotellet ett dygn i samband med att vårt barnbarn skulle skrivas in på Universitetet i Durham.

Weekend break in Teesdale
We stayed two nights over a bank holiday weekend. Our stay was very comfortable; room was an adequate size and quiet, even though it overlooks the Market Place. The food was also very good; we had dinner in the hotel both evenings as well as breakfast, and we could not fault any of it. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The only downside was the low water pressure in the shower, but not enough of a problem to spoil our stay.
