Cheap flights to Budapest
Beautiful Budapest is blessed geographically by a stunning setting on the Danube – and aesthetically by its architectural elegance. The romance of the city’s history is complemented by the sophisticated Magyar and contemporary cuisine on offer – and all those thermal baths to soak in after over indulging.
Let’s show you how.
When to book cheap flights to Budapest
Summer sees the peak season in Budapest – you’ll definitely get the weather but the air fares will get much higher. The city’s Sziget and Ballet Festivals are in August, pushing prices even higher.
A great time to visit is in spring or autumn. Flight prices are lower and, particularly in the lake region, you’ll enjoy great weather and much less crowds.
Winter can be very cold, with temperatures averaging around -6°C and 0°C. Around the middle of December a lot of tourist attractions and museums close for the season, but Budapest is very romantic in the snow, and its certainly the cheapest time to fly.
How to find the best flight deals to Budapest
Whenever you are flying to Budapest there are always some ways you can bag a cheaper fare for your flight tickets.
If you are just browsing for flights – with no fixed dates in mind - you can find the cheapest flights by using our ‘Show Flexible Dates’ feature. This appears just above where your flight options are returned – and it lets you see exactly when the cheapest tickets are.
Getting to Budapest from Ferenc Liszt International
Flights to Budapest touch down at Ferenc Liszt International (sometimes referred to as Ferihegy). This modern airport is just 13 miles from the city centre.
It’s an easy ride into the delights of the Hungarian capital on the number 200E bus from Terminal 2 to the Metro station. Here you can jump on the Metro line M3 towards Újpest Központ to reach the city centre.
Rather than purchase a single ticket you may wish to consider saving some money with a special pass that lets you use thermal baths, enter museums and enjoy unlimited travel during your stay.
A slightly more expensive – but more convenient option – is to take the private minibus service. You won’t have to change but, depending on the number of door-to-door stops ahead of you, it may end up taking longer.
How to get to and around in Budapest
While the Metro may offer the most efficient form of transport it’s impossible to see the sights when you are underground. For a more scenic way to get around the city consider making use of the BKK boat service, which runs passenger ferries along the glorious Danube. You can also hop on one of the city’s trams or buses.
Sightseeing and activities in Budapest
Just stroll through the city to admire its grand architecture, but try and point yourself in the direction of these destinations.
Memento Park is an unusual attraction that offers an open-air park where the ghosts of communism live on in the form of monumental statues. Ripped from their historical setting there’s something undeniably comical about all those heroic poses.
Szechenyi Baths is just one among many thermal baths in Budapest. Yet, it benefits from a real sense of history and a location next to a palace. Soak away your cares in the largest medicinal pool in Europe.
Fisherman’s Bastion, on the Buda side of the river, offers fantastic views of Pest. Take the funicular near the Chain Bridge for the steep climb up to Buda Castle, before strolling to Fisherman’s Bastion to take in the panorama.
