• Travelling on a plane can be a great experience if you've got all the right gear. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a few magazines. Next, leave space in your hand luggage for your electronic devices, chargers, any medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by security. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved pocket knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and fireworks, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Don comfortable layers and opt for shoes that are closed-toe, flat and easy to remove.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a potential risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clots forming due to poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.

• Be sure to have your ID and travel documents close by. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as bulky coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All your electronics, including your phone and laptop, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Want to bring along your favourite cologne or perfume? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you can keep it with you on board.
• Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you're less likely to have to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to extra screening.
